Musselburgh: Collaboration sees Tom, 72, launch sixth album

A Musselburgh singer/songwriter is set to launch a new album next month.

Tom Fairnie, 72, originally from the Pinkie area but who now lives at Newcraighall, worked with German singer-songwriter Klaus Adamaschek on the album Still Unbroken.

Tom, who started recording his own music albums at the age of 50, met Klaus, 65, through a mutual friend and they “immediately felt a deep musical kinship”.

A “musical bond” was forged and the duo met up in Germany last October and played two concerts together.

Tom, who was Klaus’s guest in Rotenburg an der Fulda for two weeks, also visited Rotenburg’s Toolhouse Studios, where they recorded an album together, each contributing six new and previously unreleased songs.

Tom’s wife Jane, a former chairperson of Vibrant Musselburgh, which seeks to promote creativity in Musselburgh, joined in the harmonies.

East Lothian music lovers will have the chance to hear both performers when they launch their album in the Lighthouse Community Hub in Prestonpans on February 10.

Doors open at 7pm, with the price £10 at the door.

Tom said: “Sometimes you hear songs that you immediately respond to because the songs seem to know you.

“Sometimes you even imagine that the songwriter actually knows you.

“Sometimes you meet people who just seem to get you. That’s how I felt when I first heard Klaus’s songs.

“What was genuinely surprising was that Klaus felt the same way about my songs and it was all confirmed when we met.”

When he retired from his job as an audio visual manager at the University of Edinburgh, Tom concentrated on his music career.

He has now released five solo works – producing studio album Lightning In The Dark in Austin, Texas, with a number of musicians who have worked with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

Musically, he “breaks new ground” with his “Celticana”, a Celtic Americana sound including folk, country and blues.

Klaus also brings his musical passion to American folk, rock and country music. He and his band Shiregreen have now released 14 albums.
