Krawiec claims national title at 16 as East Lothian swimmers excel

SWIMMING star Stefan Krawiec beat all-comers to win a Scottish title at the age of just 16 at the weekend, as well as breaking a Scottish junior record.

Krawiec was among a group from East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) who were in action at the Scottish National Short Course Swimming Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh.

The meet attracted some of the best swimmers from across Scotland and the rest of the UK, including Olympians such as Matt Richards and Freya Anderson.

Fifteen swimmers from ELST qualified for the meet, a fantastic achievement given the quality of swimmers competing.

Four of those swimmers went on to qualify for finals, with three of them crowned Scottish junior champions.

Krawiec won the 100m freestyle (50.77s) junior title, as well as securing both the Scottish national and Scottish junior titles for the 100m butterfly.

In qualifying for the 100m butterfly final, Krawiec broke the Scottish junior short course record in a time of 54.37s.

Luke Hornsey, also 16, won two Scottish junior titles, clocking 8m22.45s to win the 800m freestyle title and 16m15.44s in winning the 1,500m freestyle.

Fellow 16-year-old Calum Peebles was Scottish junior champion in the 200m backstroke, with a time of 2mins 05.25secs.

Helen Stoddart finished fifth in the 50m butterfly final in a time of 28.76secs.

Jamie Ward, ELST head coach, was delighted with all the swimmers’ efforts over the weekend.

He said: “Our athletes swam very well this weekend.

“To pick up five Scottish Junior titles and a Scottish National Title is an amazing achievement, and we now look forward to the Scottish National Leagues Finals in Glasgow thisweekend, where I am very hopeful of a strong showing from ELST.”

Krawiec now heads to Canada to take part in the Ontario Junior International meet where at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

He gets into the pool tomorrow where he will compete in the 200m freestyle and 100m fly.

On Saturday he competes in the 50m fly and 200m fly.

He concludes his trip on Sunday with the 200m individual medley.
