Countryside Rangers warn public to stay clear of closed coastal path

East Lothian Countryside Rangers have advised the public adhere to signs warning them to stay clear of the closed section of a popular coastal route in Dunbar.

East Lothian Council stepped in to close the walkway, known as Doo Rock Coastal Path, following recent heavy rainfall last week.

The Rangers have warned the public to stick to the signs which tell people to avoid the path and directs them to a short diversion route.

In a statement on their Facebook the Rangers said: “We would like to remind walkers that part of the Clifftop Trail/The John Muir Way at The Glebe, Dunbar, is closed for safety reasons.

“The path continues to slump and is very dangerous to anyone who attempts to ignore the signage and barriers, which have now been reinforced.

“Please follow the short diversion, which is signposted.

“Engineers continue to assess the extent of the damage and plan future repair work.”

Following its closure last week a spokesperson for the route confirmed it had been closed for safety reasons.

She said: “Heavy rainfall in recent days is believed to have contributed to erosion of foundations causing cracking and slippage of the path.

“Engineers are carrying out full investigations to assess the extent of the damage.”
